Learn More About Our Tailgate
In the cold-hearted crucible of a Minnesota winter, tailgating isn’t just a pregame ritual—it’s a test of endurance, ingenuity, and Viking spirit. And no one has mastered that balance better than the legendary Battle Wagon Tailgate Crew. Since its inception in 1998, this rolling fortress of fandom has become an icon of Minnesota Vikings gameday culture. Built not for speed but for swagger, the Battle Wagon stands proudly as one of the most distinctive and creative tailgate vehicles in the National Football League.
The Battle Wagon was born, fittingly, around a crackling campfire in the Washington Avenue parking lot, as friends Terry, Doug, TJ, and Michael sought a better way to experience gameday. Huddled against the bitter cold, fueled by beer and big ideas, they imagined a tailgate rig that could blend the warmth of a cozy living room with the energy of Vikings fandom. The result? A fully restored 1966 Chevy Step Van, painted in blindingly bold Viking purple and gold with custom graphics, sirens, horns, and more lights than a Minneapolis Christmas parade.
When you first lay eyes on the Battle Wagon outside U.S. Bank Stadium, it’s clear this is no ordinary ride. The front end sports steer horns, purple fog lights, and strobe beacons, while the roof bristles with marine-grade speakers and a retractable satellite dish. A CB antenna and weather sensor complete the outside gear, because yes—when you're tailgating through a Minnesota snowstorm, you check the wind conditions from inside the truck.
But the real magic of the Battle Wagon is on the inside. Step through the rear doors and you’re transported not into a tailgate, but into a warm, wood-paneled sanctuary. The interior is carpeted in green AstroTurf, and centered between a plush couch and a treasured easy chair—known reverently as “Grandma’s Chair,” in memory of the late Laura Moravec—is a fully functional gas fireplace. It’s the centerpiece of what might be the NFL’s coziest tailgate, surrounded by shelves and walls decked in Vikings memorabilia from every era: Tarkenton, Cox, Tinglehoff, Carter, Moss, and more. Tucked beside the fireplace is a flat-screen TV linked to a satellite decoder and stereo system, offering fans a warm escape from the Minnesota chill without missing a moment of the day’s action.
Tailgating with the Battle Wagon crew isn’t just about the comforts—it’s about the camaraderie. These guys know how to host, pouring cold local brews like Grain Belt and Summit while welcoming fans of all stripes, from Vikings lifers to curious out-of-towners. It’s not uncommon to see costumed icons of Vikings fandom drop by, including Ragnar, the Spiking Viking, and the famously burly Syd Davy, who once launched Randy Moss into the end zone seats with arms so legendary that John Madden himself called them out on air.
On gameday in Minneapolis, the streets around U.S. Bank Stadium swell with purple pride. In the designated Purple Lots and parking ramps, fans gather early, firing up grills, blasting music, and engaging in impromptu games of cornhole, all while exchanging high-fives and hot brats with strangers-turned-friends. It’s a festive, welcoming atmosphere known across the league for its warmth—even when the temperature isn’t. And of course, no pregame experience is complete without the thunderous rhythm of the Skol Chant, as thousands of Vikings fans clap, chant, and stomp in perfect unison, shaking the ground before even setting foot inside the stadium.
But even among this sea of purple, the Battle Wagon shines brightest. It isn’t just a tailgate vehicle—it’s a tribute to the enduring spirit of Vikings fandom. From the detailed design of the vehicle to the passion of its crew, the Battle Wagon embodies what it means to bleed purple and gold, week in and week out, no matter the weather. If you find yourself in Minneapolis on a crisp fall Sunday, do yourself a favor—follow the scent of brats and the flash of strobe lights. Seek out the steer horns and the glow of the fireplace. And step into the warmth of the Battle Wagon, where tradition, hospitality, and Vikings pride roll together on four wheels.
