Learn More About Our Tailgate
In the sprawling sea of powder blue that fills the Pink Lot outside SoFi Stadium on Sundays, there’s one group whose roots run deeper and whose presence looms larger—Swoopin’ D. What began in the late 1990s in the A4 North lot of San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium has grown into one of the most recognized and respected tailgates in the Chargers fanbase. Founded by Jesse “Swoopin’ D” Constancio in 1998, the group took its name from a nickname for the team’s hard-hitting defense—“swoopin’ on the ball like starving dogs on a ham hock”—a phrase so often repeated by Jesse that it eventually became his own moniker. For Jesse and his son Sam, tailgating wasn’t just pregame entertainment. It was family time, father and son bonding with burgers, beer, and Bolts football. “We didn’t go fishing,” Sam says. “We tailgated.”
Over the decades, the tailgate evolved from a modest setup into a traveling celebration of San Diego sports, from Chargers and Padres to Aztecs football and even Strikeforce events. As the community grew, so did its mission—built on fan unity, family values, and the idea that sports should bring people together, not drive them apart. Inclusivity has always been central to the Swoopin’ D identity. Whether you’re a lifelong season ticket holder or a first-time visitor wearing the wrong jersey, you’re welcomed with open arms, a cold drink, and a full plate of food. When the Chargers made the controversial move north to Los Angeles, many fans walked away from the team. But the core of Swoopin’ D—led by Sam Constancio, Donney Cummins, and other loyal diehards—stuck it out. It wasn’t easy, but they knew their traditions, friendships, and love for the game were bigger than a zip code.
Today, Swoopin’ D anchors the action at Thunder Alley, the epicenter of pregame celebration for Chargers fans at SoFi Stadium. Located in the Pink Lot, Thunder Alley is where the Bolt Family comes alive—an enormous, high-energy convergence of grills, tents, DJs, and lifelong fans all tailgating side by side. Swoopin’ D sets up shop right in the middle of it, helping host one of the largest and most inclusive tailgates in Southern California. From the custom food setups to the thumping music and laid-back hospitality, it’s more than just a party—it’s an institution. Contributions are welcomed, vibes are always high, and the focus remains on building lasting memories and friendships. This isn’t just a place to eat and drink before a game—it’s where new fans are born, lifelong loyalties are passed down, and legends are made.
A big part of that legend is the annual awarding of Tailgating Hall of Fame Challenge Coins, given out to a select few each year who exemplify the values of the Swoopin’ D crew. These coins represent more than attendance—they signify commitment, spirit, and contributions to the culture. For Donney Cummins, a retired U.S. Army veteran and one of the leaders of the tailgate, Swoopin’ D is about legacy and loyalty. He recalls growing up with Aztecs football and cheering on the Chargers at the “old Murph,” and sees the tailgate as a way to share that history with new generations of fans. “A tailgate never loses,” Donney says. “And everyone is free to walk up and join the party.” It’s that simple. Come once, and you’ll be telling coworkers about it Monday morning. Come twice, and you’re already family.
From its San Diego beginnings to its thriving home at SoFi Stadium, the Swoopin’ D Tailgate stands as a model of resilience, unity, and joy in fan culture. It’s a place where tradition meets innovation, where community comes first, and where the love for the Chargers runs deep. Tailgating may have changed locations and rules over the years, but the heart of Swoopin’ D has never wavered. Whether you’re from San Diego, L.A., or anywhere in between—if you believe in football, friendship, and respecting the vibe—then there’s a plate waiting for you at the Swoopin’ D tailgate.
